Assembling your bike is empowering. It’s a great way to understand how it works! Please click here to view our step by step guide to assembly. View our assembly video here.

  • The bike arrives in a box. The handlebars, front wheel, front mudguard, pedals and saddle must be attached.
  • You will need a multi-tool or hex key set, 10mm spanner, 15mm wrench, scissors, pliers, a screwdriver and a pump.

Some things to note:

  • If you assemble your own bike, it’s very important that you do it correctly. If you have doubts, pay your local bike mechanic to check over your handiwork or assemble it for you.
  • In the first few weeks of use, you can expect your bike to ‘bed-in’. You must check everything is tight before each ride. Cables will stretch so your gears and brakes will need adjustment.

FAQs Kids balance bikes

What is a balance bike?

A balance bike is a two-wheeled bike with no pedals where the child pushes with their feet. A balance bike helps teach toddlers as young as 18-months to balance on two wheels. Then, after a brief learning period, toddlers and kids learn to control the bike and ride with no assistance from their parents (except maybe with the help of stabilisers).

What age should a child get a bike? What age can child use balance bike?

A child can start to use a balance bike from around 18 months - 2 years old. The first thing to do is measure your child’s inside leg, from the sole of the foot up to the inside of the crotch. The minimum inside leg for our balance bikes is 30cm, and you can see our measurement chart here. Our pedal bikes are very slightly bigger than the balance bikes, and require a minimum inside leg measurement of 33cm. 12” pedal bikes can also be use from around 2 years old.

Which bike size will fit my kid?

Getting the correct bike size starts with measuring the inside leg. The product page has the minimum and maximum range for each model. Using heights/ages is trickier. Everyone has different length legs. You could find the size chart here

What is the difference between a balance bike and a pedal bike?

Balance bikes do not have pedals or front/rear brakes. The rider sits on the balance bike and scoots along using their feet. Balance bikes are lighter (and therefore easier to carry) than pedal bikes because they have far less components. Pedal bikes have pedals and front/rear brakes. Our 12 and 16" pedal bikes come with colour-matched stabilisers (training wheels). Our junior pedal bikes look like mini adult bikes, and come with lots of features including colour-matched mudguards and chainguards, proper pneumatic tyres for smooth cycling, handmade wicker baskets, comfy sprung saddles and a classic ding-dong bell.

Can I add pedals to a balance bike?

No you can't. If you are concerned about getting the maximum possible use out of the bike as your child grows, it may be better to get a pedal bike instead, and start with using the stabilisers provided.

Can I add training wheels to a balance bike?

In theory you can add training wheels (stabilisers) to your balance bike but it is not recommended, because they will impede the correct use of the balance bike. Training wheels (stabilisers) are not provided with balance bikes.

How do balance bikes benefit my child?

The benefits of a balance bike are that they teach balance and steering. Because there are no pedals and no gears, your mini rider can focus on this, and will very likely learn to cycle quicker when they upgrade to a pedal bike. Balance bikes are also lighter (and therefore easier to carry), and the sizing is slightly smaller.

Can I buy a larger bike to allow for growing room?

Always measure your child's inside leg and check our sizing guide before choosing the size. If you're not sure about the sizing, contact us and we can advise. It's important to buy a bike that your child can fit on. Our Junior bikes have plenty of room for growth, as saddles and handlebars can be adjusted easily.

Will the balance bike be assembled?

Your bike will be delivered to you partially assembled in a box. Assembly is really easy, and you can follow our instructions here. Assembly is normally done inside 30 minutes and basic tools are included with your bike. You will need scissors and a bike pump.

Why are the dust caps are not included?

We can no longer include the valve dust caps on the balance bikes due to import restrictions on small parts which pose potential choking hazards for children.
