When Can a Baby Use a Balance Bike?

When Can a Baby Use a Balance Bike?

The introduction of balance bikes has given children the freedom to be on wheels at a much younger age. But when can a baby use one?

While there’s no definitive age, as every child is different, 18 months old is a good starting point. There are, however, a few factors parents must consider. And if your little one meets these criteria, they may be ready to start riding this pedal-less bicycle.

Is Your Toddler Physically Ready?

To ride a toddler balance bike, a child needs a strong core to stay steady as they move. This helps them push along with their feet, stay in control, and glide smoothly while on the saddle.

Ways to tell if your little one is ready:

  • Can your toddler walk and run independently? Such skills mean they have the leg strength and coordination needed to push off and balance on the bike.

  • See if your little one can stand on one leg for a few seconds or balance on a low curb or beam. If they can maintain balance without support, it shows good trunk strength.

  • Check if your child can straddle the balance bike with both feet flat on the ground. They should be able to stand over the bike frame with ease.

  • Look at how well your little rider can steer and stop. Basic coordination matters here. Simple play, like throwing and catching a ball, can give you a good idea.

Is Your Baby Emotionally Ready?

Physical capability alone isn’t enough. Your toddler must also be mentally prepared to enjoy and benefit from riding a balance bike. Keep these factors in mind:

  • Do they show interest in riding a junior bike? Curiosity about exploring on wheels may suggest readiness.

  • Note if your child expresses excitement. Positive emotions may also be indicators of preparedness to ride a baby bike.

  • Test if your toddler can follow instructions, such as “push with your feet” or “hold the handlebars”. Being able to understand directions is an important skill.

  • Notice how they handle small falls or setbacks. If they stay calm and keep trying, they’re more likely to stick with learning to ride.

More Things to Consider Before Getting Started
