Why 12” Bikes Are the Right Start for Small Riders
You’ll see advice suggesting you start with a 14-inch so they can grow into it. That can work in some cases, but it doesn’t always suit where a child is when they’re just starting.
A bike that’s too big is harder to control and more difficult to handle. If they can’t put their feet on the ground, confidence takes a hit, and the bike gets left unused. A 12-inch bike avoids that, thanks to:
-
Better ground control: They can place both feet flat on the ground, giving them stability while learning.
-
Easier to handle: The lighter frame suits their strength, making turning, pushing, and lifting easier to manage.
-
Right-sized for now: It matches their current size and ability, leaving them free to focus on learning to ride instead of struggling with the bike.
What’s the Best Bike for a 3-Year-Old?
A 12-inch bike fits most 3-year-olds. It matches their height and coordination. At this stage, learning balance, pedalling, and steering is also easier.
We specifically recommend our 12 Inch Kids’ Bikes, the miniature version of our adult bikes, designed for ages 2-4. They’re built with stable frames, with everything sized for small hands.
A lot of our customers choose these for their young riders, too.
“My 3-year-old daughter adores her new Gingersnap 12” wheel bike and is either riding it or putting her favourite toys in the gorgeous basket all day long. - Robin D.”
Here's what a member of our design team had to say:
“Most 12-inch bikes share the same basic geometry — there's only so much you can vary at this size. So we put our effort into the things a child actually interacts with every day: proper inflated tyres instead of the hard plastic ones cheap starter bikes come with, a chain guard so little fingers stay clear of the drive, a vegan leather saddle, and a wicker basket fitted as standard on every model rather than offered as an upsell. The bodywork takes its cues from classic British bicycles, in pastel colours that are unmistakably Bobbin.”

Gingersnap
[Product Image]

Our Gingersnap bikes are popular among both parents and kids. Starting with this Gingernsap 12” Balance Bike - the perfect transition to a pedal bike. Its pedal-less design allows children to move forward by pushing off the ground with their feet while sitting on the seat. This method helps them learn to balance without the added complication of pedalling.

We also have the standard Gingersnap 12” Wheel that comes with stabilisers (training wheels), plus handmade wicker baskets and many more design features.
Both designs are available in 5 popping colours: Blossom Pink, Mint, Duck Egg Blue, Yellow, and Red Pink.
Moonbug
The Moonbug model shares the same durable steel frame construction as the Gingersnap, with 12-inch wheels (and other sizes available) and toddler-friendly ergonomics. It’s a better choice if your child suits a straighter, slightly lower handlebar position.

Moonbug “12 Balance Bike is for those who are eager to start their cycling journey and build confidence in balancing before graduating to our 16-inch Bikes. The front basket is slightly wider, with a rectangular design and a darker wicker shade. It also comes in bold colours like Blueberry and Red.

The standard Moonbug 12” Wheel is edgier, with a retro-modern style and darker colour options compared with the pastel and bright tones available on the Gingersnap.
Skylark
The Skylark is Bobbin’s sports model. It upgrades to a premium, ultra-lightweight alloy frame and fork. This material makes it easier for a 2-to-4-year-old to lift, manoeuvre, and master control.

It’s completely pared back and streamlined. There’s no basket and no mudguards. Instead of the wide, casual city saddle, it features a sleek vegan leather sports saddle and cool-grey, BMX-style vinyl pedals.
Our Skylark 12” Wheels come exclusively as a standard pedal bike, and are available in the fun colours Clementine and Moody Blue.

FAQs
Can you put stabilisers on a 12-inch balance bike?
No, balance bikes are designed without pedals or a drivetrain. They can’t accommodate stabilisers. If you want your child to learn using stabilisers, opt for our standard Gingernsap 12”, Moonbug 12” or Skylark 12” pedal models instead.

What inside leg measurement is a 12-inch bike for?
A 12-inch bike is generally suited to an inside leg of 33cm to 43cm. This is a better guide than age, which covers children aged 2 to 4.
Measuring the inside leg gives a more accurate fit and ensures they can reach the ground or pedals safely. Here’s Why You Need to Use a Size Guide Before Buying a Bike.
Do Bobbin 12-inch bikes come with brakes?
Yes. Unlike many toddler bikes that use coaster brakes (pedalling backwards to stop), our Bobbin 12-inch bikes use front and rear alloy dual-pivot brakes. The levers are also designed with a shorter reach and lighter pull.

Do 12-inch Bobbin bikes arrive fully assembled?
The bike arrives in a box. The handlebars, front wheel, front mudguard, pedals and saddle must be attached. The wicker basket is secured using straps.
We include a straightforward, step-by-step instruction guide and all the basic tools, but you’ll need your own scissors, pliers, a screwdriver, and a pump.
