When Can a Baby Use a Balance Bike?
The introduction of balance bikes has given children the freedom to be on wheels at a much younger age. But when can a baby use one?
Generally, when they’re 18 months old — although there’s no definitive age since every child is different and their readiness varies. However, there are a few factors you can consider. If your little one meets these criteria, they may be ready to start riding this pedal-less bicycle.
Is Your Toddler Physically Ready?
A child must have a strong trunk that coordinates with their movement to learn and acquire balance while riding a toddler balance bike. This quality allows your little one to have control while propelling forward using their feet and glide while sitting on the saddle.
Here are some considerations and techniques to test if your child is prepared:
- Can your toddler walk and run independently? Such skills mean they have the leg strength and coordination needed to push off and balance on the bike.
- See if your little one can stand on one leg for a few seconds or balance on a low curb or beam. If they can maintain balance without support, it shows good trunk strength.
- Check if your child can straddle the balance bike with both feet flat on the ground. They should be able to stand over the bike frame with ease.
- Assess your little rider’s ability to coordinate movements, such as steering and stopping. Good coordination is a must, so consider engaging them in simple activities like catching and throwing a ball.
Is Your Baby Emotionally Ready?
Physical capability alone isn’t enough. Your toddler must also be mentally prepared to enjoy and benefit from riding a balance bicycle. Consider the following aspects:
- Do they show interest in riding a junior bike? Curiosity about exploring on wheels may suggest readiness.
- Note if your child expresses excitement. Positive emotions may also be indicators of preparedness to ride a baby bike.
- Test if the toddler can follow simple instructions, such as “push with your feet” or “hold the handlebars”. Understanding and following directions are essential skills.
- Observe how your future cyclist reacts to minor falls or setbacks. If they can handle such frustrations, they are more likely to persist in learning to ride.
Practical Considerations
When it comes to kids bike size for babies aged 18 months to 2 years, choose a balance bike with a seat height that can be adjusted to match their inseam length. The seat should be low enough for them to sit with their feet flat on the ground. For toddlers aged 3 to 4 years and up, we recommend our Bobbin Moonbug and Gingersnap balance bike in 12” models.
Equip them with well-fitting toddler helmets and knee and elbow pads for safety in case of falls. Parents should also ensure their children are well aware of their surroundings. Always supervise and provide assistance whenever necessary. Refer to our guide, ‘The Cycling Rules Children Need to Learn,’ to learn more.
