Maintenance
Bikes
This is it, you are now the proud owner of a Bobbin bike. Here are a few things to consider to make sure it will be your reliable wheeled companion for a long time to come.
Storing your bike:
- Bikes are not happy in very humid conditions, so try to keep it in a well-ventilated space, ideally inside. Moisture on the bike can cause rusting/discolouration on some parts. Wicker baskets do also not fair well if they are often in wet conditions.
- Full exposure to the sun can also be problematic on some plastic parts and create discoloration.
- If locking your bike, take care that the lock does not rub/knock your bike frame.
Maintaining your bike:
- Make sure your tyres are always well inflated. Check the PSI written on the side of the tyres.
- Once a month it’s worth lubricating your chain and checking the state of the derailleur, if you have one.
- On junior bikes, make sure the stabilisers are still well attached. Movement can loosen screws.
- Check your brakes are still working properly and tighten the cables or change the pads if necessary.
- Once a month check your handlebars, wheel nuts, pedals, and other components that make work loose such as mudguard and carrier rack fittings. Tighten as necessary.
- For more detailed information, please refer to your owner’s manual provided with your bike.
Cleaning your bike:
- Use a bike cleaner or some mild detergent on the frame, grips, saddle and tyres and apply frame polish (or car wax) afterwards to keep its shine going. Dry the bike thoroughly after cleaning.
- Use a suitable degreaser and a lubricant on the moving parts
Helmets
Your Bobbin helmet is here to protect you but there are few things to consider to make sure it can do it’s job well.
- Avoid unnecessary impacts: it can weaken helmets over time.
- Avoid extreme heat: glue is a component of your helmet and doesn’t like high temperatures.
- Avoid spray paint and solvents: These can break down the glue too. If you want to decorate your helmet, you can always use stickers!
- When cleaning your helmet, use mild detergent and tepid water. Dishwashers are a no-go as is bleach and very warm water.
- Let it air dry and avoid leaving it on a heater.
- If you had a crash, you will need to replace your helmet: They are designed and tested to withstand one major impact. Some damage can be hard to detect so if you are in doubt, best to replace it.
Panniers and Bags
To extend the lifespan of your bag, we recommend you:
- Don’t put excessive strain on fixing straps or closing straps.
- Don’t over-fill or carry very heavy items. Note: It’s better to mount your lock on the frame than carry in your bag. If it’s rattling around in your bag, your bag will eventually split.
- Respect any leather details. Use a leather protection product.
- Clean your bag using mild detergent and warm water.
- Store your bag inside when not in use. Rain and sun will eventually degrade/bleach the fabric.
