20 Child-Friendly Cycle Routes In North Wales

Wales is a beautiful country surrounded by so much life, wonder and scenery. So grab your bike and experience it the best way we know how - via our favourite Wales cycle routes!

Mountain Bike Trails

Lon Las Ogwen Bangor - Taking this route will take you up the incredible hills to experience one of the best cycle routes in north wales where you'll be able to see breathtaking views for miles. These hills are part of Snowdonia and will take you around 55 minutes by bike. It's best done by experienced cyclists since it's uphill.

Yr Afon Trail - This mountain trail in North Wales is great for cyclists who want to experience tougher terrain. On this route, it's best to cycle with a mountain bike since it is mountainous terrain, but a hybrid bike will also be a good substitute as long as it's a hybrid between a mountain bike and a road bike. Overall, it'll take you around 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete.

Mawddach Trail - These mountains are great for beginners with a variation of flat land and mountainous terrain. This route follows the incredible old Ruabon to Barmouth railway line so if a historic route is your cup of tea, this is perfect!

Llandegla Forest - Popular amongst mountain bikers, this is perfect for kids and families alike who want to learn mountain biking safely. Here you'll find a cycle shop as well as a cafe so making a day trip out of this beautiful part of the country is ideal.

Cycling Trails

Lon Las Eifion - This trail is great for some sightseeing across the country of Wales. You'll start your trip by the incredible Caernarfon Castle and finish at a radio mast south of Penygroes. This cycling trail is uphill so be prepared for both a climb and some rewarding and stunning views at the end.

Lon Las Cefni - Surrounded by fields and water, this is ideal for family bike rides, especially with younger children. This is an 11-mile long route and along the way, you'll be passing an old market town as well as a reservoir. You can be sure of some breathtaking and wonderful views as you ride along this pleasant route.

Acton Park - This park is great for families who want an easy ride, this is great for beginner cyclists also. The route is only 2 miles long so perfect for young kids, it also has wheelchair accessibility so everyone can enjoy their day!

The Alwen Trail -  This trail is great, it’s ideal for beginners, young families and calm days out on a calm route. It's 7.5 miles long and is an easy to follow, fully marked cycle track. Through this journey, you'll be following the water's edge so get ready for some beautiful and spectacular views!

Lon Las Peris - This route is situated in Snowdonia national park and is the shortest of all the cycling routes in this post, great for beginners and a brief day out. The route is just a mile long so will only take you around 30 minutes to complete, leaving you with a completely free day for lazing about in the sun.

Llyn PeninsulaThis great part of Snowdonia is a wonderful day out, providing stunning scenery and history dating back centuries. There are 3 cycle routes in Wales you have as an option on the Llyn Peninsula, they range from 14 miles to 27 miles long.

Loops

Cwm Cerist from Dinas Mawddwy - If you're down for a challenge then this route is perfect, you'll find scenic routes and gorgeous panoramic views. This loop takes around 7 hours so it's best tackled during summer when you'll have hours of sun to accompany you on this off road cycling route.

Coastal Path Loop from Cei Llydan - This difficult route will take you around 5 hours to complete. Along the way, you'll see some historic houses, breathtaking water views from lakes and streams, as well as Conwy Castle. If you're taking your family then this would be a great break from the cycling trip.

 
Menai Bridge viewpoint Loop from Holyhead - This is another difficult route and will take you around 6 hours to complete from start to finish. Along the way, you'll pass Menai Bridge which is the gateway to the Isle of Anglesey as well as some gorgeous places to stop and admire the beautiful scenery the country of Wales has to offer.
 
Old Dee Bridge Loop from Hope (Flintshire) - This loop will take you around 2 hours to complete, along the way you'll see incredible pieces of history and beautiful waterside views. You start and finish at Cleopatra's Bistro so there's always time for a food pitstop!

River Dee Loop from Broughton - Taking you around 1 hour 30, this loop is amongst the easier paths to take. This is the perfect route for kids and inexperienced cyclists to undertake on a gorgeous summer day since you'll be surrounded by endless water and cross over beautiful bridges and the skill level needed for a ride like this is low.

Coastal

Prestatyn to Llandudno - This cycle track takes you from one side of the Welsh coast to another. You'll be able to complete this in around 1 hour and 45 minutes and along the way, you'll pass beaches, spectacular views and plenty of other cyclists. It's a 16-mile route so make sure you have everything you need!

Llandudno to Llanfairfechan - This coastal route is slightly smaller than the above at 12 miles long. It'll take you just over an hour to complete and since it's mostly paved, you'll be able to cycle at leisure with your family and friends. Perfect for a family cycling trip!

Felinheli to Caernarfon - If you're looking for somewhere to start with your kids then this is ideal. It'll take just 25 minutes to cycle and is only 3 miles long. Along the way, you'll pass impressive historic buildings such as castles and walls and some gorgeous characteristic towns.

Holyhead to Bayston Hill - This is a route that should only be attempted by older kids and experienced cyclists since it would take you on average around 10 hours to complete, so make sure your fitness level is high. This is perfect for an all-day summer trip since you'll have hours of sunshine. You'll pass some beautiful waterside views along this coastal path. Don't forget to grab your water bottle before you head off!

Bangor to Chester - If you're looking for a challenge with a scenic water view then this is exactly what you need. This route is difficult so shouldn't be attempted by kids too young, it'll take you around 5 hours to complete and is around 70 miles long.

North Wales has so many beautiful parts you just need to visit, so grab your bike, and your helmet and head off on a gorgeous trip through the countryside. You could even head off to some cycle routes in south wales after and experience the country as a whole!
