5 Worthwhile Cycling Routes for Families in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a very cycle-friendly city. It offers many safe cycling routes which all ages, especially children, can enjoy. These include off-road bike paths, on-road cycle lanes, forward stop lines at traffic lights, and paved flat parks.

There’s something for every family to enjoy by simply pedalling around the city. If you don’t know where to start, check out these five child-friendly Edinburgh bike routes.

Park of Leith

Leith Links is a public park in the docks district of Edinburgh. Its flat expanses of grass, bordered by mature trees, provide the perfect backdrop for weekend rides with family. Children can enjoy the play equipment in the park, with picnic tables and benches for outdoor meals. If they want to cycle around on their kids’ bikes, choose your route below:

  • Saughton Skate Park - Five Ways Junction loop from Pilrig (12.3 miles)
  • Fisherrow Harbour - Portobello Promenade loop from The Shore (11.0 miles)
  • Portobello Promenade - John Rattray Statue loop from The Shore (6.15 miles)
  • Cafe Montague & Deli - Five Ways Junction loop from Fort (10.8 miles)

All routes mostly have paved surfaces, suitable for all skill levels and any fitness levels.

Helix Park

The Helix is a vast 350-hectare park near Falkirk and Grangemouth. You’ll be welcomed by two 30-metre-tall Kelpies statues rising from the Forth and Clyde Canal. The park offers plenty of walking paths and bike trails, all paved and flat, making it great for wheels. Kids can bike or scoot between The Kelpies and the playpark.

Tip: Invite your children to walk up to the sculptures and touch them. Try to make echoes by shouting as loud as possible between the metal panels of The Kelpies — something kids would love to do!

Loganlea Reservoir Loop from Haymarket

This loop takes you from Edinburgh to the outskirts and back again. Starting at Haymarket, the route guides you through quiet streets and dedicated bike lanes leading out into the countryside. The terrain is mostly flat with some gentle inclines, making the loop manageable in length and suitable for children comfortable with moderate distances. A lightweight bike, such as a road bike or hybrid bike, is recommended for the uphill sections.

Along the way, kids can enjoy spotting wildlife and taking in the natural beauty around the reservoir. There are also plenty of spots to stop for a picnic or a rest.

The Duddingstin Lock loop begins at Edinburgh Waverley, the main railway station serving the city. From there, pedal away as the view transitions from city streets to more scenic areas. As you approach Duddingston Loch, you’ll enter Holyrood Park, known for its dramatic hills and crags that shape Edinburgh’s skyline.

Holyrood Park, home to Arthur’s Seat, is like a giant playground for kids. Families can climb this ancient volcano, which rises 251 meters above the city, and enjoy breathtaking 360-degree views from the top. If climbing is too much, cycle along the mostly traffic-free route to Calton Hill and around Holyrood Park to take in the sights and sounds of the city instead. It’s the perfect place to enjoy your adult bike. Either way, it’s a win-win!

From parks and historic Edinburgh cycling routes, we now move to a path that offers beautiful coastal views. Your family bike ride adventure begins at Bennington. As you pedal along the loop, you'll enjoy scenic views of the Firth of Forth.

The route is short and flat, making it manageable for all riders. Just make sure everyone has their bottled water and snacks packed in their bike baskets or panniers. Before you know it, you’ll reach the beautiful shoreline at Silverknowes. Ring your bike bell to celebrate reaching your destination, and don’t forget to capture some photos to remember your outing!

Edinburgh has so much to offer families, but these locations can help you plan the best cycling destination for your next holiday with children. Ensure everyone stays safe on the road by wearing Bobbin helmets at all times.
