Kids Bikes Size Guide

Kids Bikes Size Guide

Finding the right size of kids bikes doesn’t have to be a difficult task. Once you have the information and measurements you need, picking out the one is easy!

Below, you’ll find all the information you need when getting the perfect fit for your child. Read on and use this post as a helping hand in finding the correct dimension.

Top tip: If your child fits two wheel sizes, choose the bigger ones; this way, they can use them as they grow. This also helps avoid dilemmas when your child outgrow their bike.

Ages 2 to 4 Years

Kids’ bike sizing is an easy task when you know how to measure properly. If your child falls within this age range, this section is perfect for you. You’ll need to grab yourself a tape measure and measure the inside of your child’s leg. Make sure to have their shoes on!

You can either choose between a balance bike or a bike with stabilisers. Your and your little rider’s choice will depend on how advanced they are at riding a bicycle.

A Bobbin balance bike is designed to help a child learn how to balance on a bike before learning to ride one. This gives them the stability they’ll need as they get older. When using one, they’ll keep their feet flat on the ground and push themselves around.

Note: Before moving to full-sized models, make sure your kid is a confident rider. They need to have a sense of balance and be a confident pedaller.

For your child’s first pedal bike, you’d be looking at 12 inch kids bikes. Most come with stabilisers, which can help kids get confident before moving on to just two wheels.

Note: If your child has an inside leg measurement of between 33cm and 45cm in length, consider these units. But if they fall above these measurements, go for bikes designed for older ones instead.

Ages 4 to 6 Years

Below is a table for children between four (4) and six (6). Measure your child's inside leg length whilst wearing shoes. Refer to the chart below to determine which 4 to 6 year old bike size would be best fitted.

Remember, if your child falls between two sizes or at the higher end of one size range, opt for a bigger bike size. Many bikes in this size also come with great accessories, like our bicycles with baskets.

This allows them to get more use out of it and results in you not having to pay for another one quicker than you’d like. At Bobbin, there are plenty of sizes available, so you won’t be short of options! Among the great features is the adjustable bike saddle position. This enables young riders to sit on their two wheels while still reaching the pedals with ease.

The ideal bike size is based on their inner leg length, not their age!

Below is a size guide to help you determine which bikes for 8 year olds your child would be able to use. This, again, is based on the length of the inside leg in centimetres with shoes on. So, if your child is in this age range, take a look at the chart below:

This age range has a wider variety when it comes to wheel sizes. This time, you’re going to be looking for a 20 inch wheel bike.

The older your child gets, the more movement there is when it comes to the perfect size bike. It’s all down to the height of the child rather than the age category they fall into, unlike when they’re younger. Our awesome Hornet bike is also in this range, part of our kids hybrid bikes range.

Ages 7 to 11 Years

The size guide below will help you decide which dimension is best if your kid falls under the age of seven (7) to eleven (11). If your little one is taller (or smaller), then you may need to look at different age ranges to find.
